Man detained after sea drama

A 40-year-old man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after a major sea operation involving a yacht.

Police officers disguised as lifeboat men arrested a man after flares were fired at a rescue boat during a three-hour drama at sea.

A 23-foot yacht was taken from a marina in Conwy early on Thursday morning and sailed around the north Wales coast to Holyhead.

About 50 people were evacuated from Holyhead marina early on Thursday.

Armed police were called in and lifeboats from Llandudno, Conwy and Holyhead all followed the yacht. Police Superintendent Gwion Jones said flares had been fired towards people in the lifeboat.

Police said the incident began at Deganwy Yacht Club, near Llandudno late on Wednesday.

Marina evacuated

The yacht was followed by Llandudno lifeboat to Point Lynas, Anglesey, where Holyhead lifeboat took over.

Police said the man on the yacht encountered difficulties and asked that the Holyhead lifeboat tow him.

Because flares had been fired, a firearms team from North Wales Police worked with the coastguard and Holyhead lifeboat.

Holyhead marina was evacuated as the yacht was brought in.

Yacht owner Christian Mach was one of those moved.

"As the dinghy was put alongside the marina, we saw about 20 or 30 armed police spring out of nowhere," he said.

"They managed to overcome a man and frogmarch him out of the marina."

Police confirmed armed officers carried out the arrest, and the man was taken into custody - he is being questioned in Caernarfon.

The people moved from their boats at Holyhead marina were taken to the town's lifeboat station, but have now been allowed to return.

Inspector Derek Roberts, of North Wales Police, praised the effective co-operation between the lifeboat, coastguard and the police.

Family rescued from sinking boat
A family had to be rescued on Sunday after the boat they were in began to sink in Holyhead harbour. An inquiry is underway into why the boat began to leak

The town's RNLI lifeboats  were  launched to rescue the mother and her two children

The passengers where taken off the 23ft cruiser, called Mrs Doubtfire, when it began taking in water.

Members of the Holyhead Sailing Club also tried to help the family.

An RNLI spokesman said the Holyhead all weather lifeboat used a pump on the boat.

But despite efforts to pump the water out, the boat was still taking in water and the owner was forced to beach it near the harbour.

An inquiry is underway into why the boat began to leak.

FEARS were mounting last night for the safety of a man missing at sea off the North Wales coast. The extensive air and sea search was abandoned at dusk last night. Four lifeboats, a helicopter and coast-guard search teams scoured the North Anglesey coast for the 50-year-old after the alarm was raised late yesterday morning. His partially-inflated 9ft rubber dinghy was discovered a short time later capsized at Carmel Head. The man, who has not been named but is not believed to be local, was last seen at 7am when he took his dinghy out of Holyhead's harbour. it is believed he was heading out to sea to test the boat  Rescue crews said he was thought to be wearing a wet suit but was not equipped with a life-jacket, radio, mobile phone or emergency flares. The alarm was raised after the man's companion grew concerned when he failed to return and called the emergency services. The Holyhead ALB and ILB Moelfre all-weather boats and the inshore rescue boats from  Trearddur Bay were launched. A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley was also scrambled along with coast-guard shore teams from four different stations along the North Anglesey coast. Holyhead Coastguard operations manager John Pearson said rescuers were battling poor weather to cover the route the man was likely to have taken in his dinghy. He said: "Because of the time that had elapsed the search area was extensive. "After the man's partially deflated dingy was found the search was concentrated in that area of Holyhead Bay. "We hope that the man had been able to get close enough to shore to be able to swim to safety. Shore teams are searching the coastline." Mr Pearson said the weather off Holy-head yesterday was poor with mist, rain and a strong, south westerly gale making the sea rough. A strong tide inshore also hampered the rescue effort.
